High Lift Color Vs Bleach

If you want to change your hair color shade to a lighter one, there are two primary ways you can do that. You could use either a high lift color or bleach.

Hair Bleach

When we talk about lightening the hair color, one of the first things that come to mind is to use bleach. It is a popular hair product that lightens hair color.

You can get it done professionally or do it at home using a bleach bath or other techniques.

Once it is lightened, you can tone it or use any other color that you like.

Bleaching usually involves making use of a bleaching powder that strips the pigment off of your hair. The best thing about bleach is that it can significantly lighten your hair.

However, bleach also has some drawbacks. First of all, bleach is damaging to the hair. It destroys both artificial and natural pigments that are present in the hair. With a lack of pigment in hair, it needs to be toned regularly.

High Lift Tint

On the other hand, there is also a new product in the market known as high lift color  that could serve as a good alternative to bleach.

High lift color was actually invented to target those people who are too skeptical about bleaching their hair. It is a type of permanent dye but it is formulated differently.

Although high lift color is similar to permanent hair dye, it may contain more ammonia and the developer is usually a 40-vol.

With such a formula, the hair color lifts more color from your hair to help lighten it, then it tones the hair at the same time.

When To Use High Lift Tint and Bleach

If high lift color  was invented as an alternative to bleach, you might be thinking that the use of both products is interchangeable.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

There are instances when it is still best to use bleach.

Although high lift color is capable of lightening the hair, it is only capable of doing it to a lesser degree. It can lighten the hair up to about 5 shades lighter.

High lift color is best used on virgin hair shaded dark blond or light brown in color. If you use a high lift color blond hair dye with the 30 vol developer, it would be capable of lightening the hair from a dark blond to a light or medium blonde.

One of the best things about high lift color is its toning property. While it lifts the hair color a few shades lighter, it also tones the hair at the same time.

Even if the high lift color can lighten the hair in several shades, it is limited to use on natural, non-colored hair. Like other dyes, it cannot lift the dye that is already present in people with dyed hair.

On the other hand, if your goal is to significantly change your hair from a dark color to a light color, jump straight to bleach instead.

L'OREAL PARIS Quick Blue Powder Bleach, 16 Ounce  would also be the product of choice if you want to lighten hair that is either naturally dark or artificially dyed dark.

The main function of bleach is to remove the existing pigments on the hair.

That also means that you may need to use a toner (or a toning shampoo) separately after bleaching to remove the brassiness of the hair.

Can You Use High Lift Color On Bleached Hair?

Let’s say you have previously bleached hair already and your regrowth is beginning to show, or perhaps you have some hot roots.

Now that you know that there is another option to lighten the hair, you might be wondering if it is good to use a high lift color on bleached hair.

Well, most professionals will tell you not to use the high lift color on the bleached hair.

If you really wanted to, you could use the high lift color only on the regrowth area of your hair.

Bleached hair is already brittle and dry. It is prone to damage, especially if you decide to use a high-lift color in it.

That’s just overprocessing your hair.

You may regret doing that decision because your hair might fall off and break. If you want to further lighten the color, you could use bleach again on bleached hair to achieve the lightness you want.

Just remember to always check the condition of your chair before you go for another round of bleaching or another round of high lift color on non-bleached hair.

Apart from potentially damaging the hair, it could also change the color of your hair. That’s because the high lift color usually contains toners so that hair can be toned at the same time.

In some cases when the bleached hair isn’t really that brassy, you don’t really need the toner in the high lift color. In that case, it could lead you to have blue or purple hues in your hair.

If you really want to use a high lift color lift on your bleached hair, be prepared for the possible consequences like damage or discoloration.

It is also best to wait for about 3 weeks before you go and use a high lift color on your bleached hair.

That will give your hair time to recover. During those weeks while you are waiting, you should also condition your hair and hydrate it to help counter some of the drying and damaging effects of bleach.

How To Fix Hot Roots With High Lift Tint

There are a variety of reasons why you could have hot roots. This discoloration happens because the product that is applied to the hair towards the scalp processes faster than the rest of the hair, due to the heat of your scalp.

That could lead you to have a lighter color of roots than the rest of your hair.

It is possible that a high lift tint could also cause this to happen if you didn’t use it properly. Nevertheless, it is possible to correct hot roots using a high lift tint.

The first thing you have to do is to let your hair rest first. If you immediately try to remedy your hot roots, they can be too fragile that it gets too damaged. It would be best to let it rest for a day or two.

After that, you’ll need to select the color of a high-lift tint to use. Make sure that the shade you choose is darker than the previously-used hair color. It should be in the same color family as the previously used, but just darker in shade.

Use that on the hot roots and blend it onto the rest of the hair. Concentrate on the roots. Blending it toward the tips will help with the transition.

Then leave it on your hair as per instructions and rinse afterward.
