Sunrise Alarm Clocks are a wonderful mechanism for waking up as naturally as possible, even when it’s still dark outside. These clocks, also called Wake-Up Lights and Dawn Simulators, mimic the light of the sun at dawn. The best sunrise alarm clocks have a color temperature changing light, that morphs from deep, orange-red to blue, as the dawn progresses.

Accompanying this light change is usually an audio clip of bird noises, ocean waves, and the like. But lots of people like to listen to the radio in the morning in order to get the news and to get the day started.

In this article, I will look at a few sunrise alarm clock radio systems, and cover the best options that do a great job simulating the dawn, and giving you the radio you need.

Sunrise Alarm Clock Radio

There are several manufacturers of sunrise alarm clocks, though only a few of them make really great products. In this article, I’ll focus on the ones that include a decent-quality FM Radio as part of the mix.

If you’re purely interested in a wake-up light, and the radio is a secondary concern, be sure to check out this article on the best dawn simulators.

After a thorough review of several Sunrise Alarm Clock Radios, I’ve found that the best is the Philips Wake-Up Light HF3520. It looks beautiful, produces a lovely, natural sunrise simulation, and has a good quality radio with good sound. The radio can be used to wake up, go to sleep, and can be left on to listen to during the day.

Sunrise Alarm Clock Radio Buyer’s Guide

There are a couple of major points to consider when shopping for your Sunrise Alarm Clock Radio. These lights can be very helpful in dealing with Seasonal Affective Disorder and are great for those who need to wake up well before the sun comes up.

I’ll touch on the major points to consider here.

Quality of Dawn Simulation

Probably the biggest difference between the more expensive, higher-end sunrise alarm clocks and the lower end alarm clocks is the way it simulates the dawn. The cheaper designs simply work like a light with a dimmer switch. The light turns on at the lowest setting, and gradually the dimmer is increased to full power. The color temperature of the light doesn’t change on the cheaper models.

The more expensive models, on the other hand, include a color-changing design. These lights start out a deep orange-red and slowly morph into the bright full-spectrum daylight color.

Number of Transitions

The more transition steps a Sunrise Alarm Clock has, the more natural the dawn will feel. If a light has only, say, 10 steps, you may notice the visual change as the light steps from one brightness level to the next. But with a higher number of steps, each step is less perceptible. It just feels like the natural brightness change of the sun.

Radio Quality

Often the radios on a sunrise alarm clock are included as an afterthought. Consequently, the reception is sometimes not so good, and the antennas aren’t great either. I’ll discuss the radio qualities in each of the individual product reviews.

Sunrise Alarm Clock Radio Reviews

In this section, I’ll look at 5 of the best sunrise alarm clocks with radios. I’ll start with a comparison table to get oriented, and then move into individual reviews.

Philips Wake-Up Light HF3520

Philips Wake-Up Light HF3520

Key Points at a Glance

  • Color-changing sunrise simulation
  • Morphs between red and blue light in a 20-step journey
  • Beautiful design and aesthetic
  • Includes 5 wake-up sounds
  • Good quality digital FM Radio included
  • Light and clock can be turned off completely

The Details

The Philips Wake-Up Light HF3520 is my pick as the all-around best dawn simulator light, and is an excellent choice for those who can stomach its price.

This light has the best balance of features and options. Most importantly, it produces an excellent dawn simulation! The HF3520 morphs between a gentle orange-red light, and transitions to a luminous daylight blue light that is ideal for waking up.

You can choose how long you want this transition to take, which is helpful for those who tend to wake up mid-way through the dawn simulation.

Additionally, you can pick one of 5 wake-up sounds, or wake up with the radio if you prefer.

The sound quality on the radio is good, and is a step up from the lower-end models on this list. The radio volume fades in gradually when the alarm goes off, so you don’t get blasted immediately if you turn on the radio.

Of course, you can use this radio to listen to during the day, and also set it as a sleep radio. It will shut off automatically after a set period of time, if you like.

The Bottom Line

The Philips Wake-Up Light HF3520 is the best sunrise alarm clock on the market. It hits a reasonable price point given its feature list, and it works really well. The radio sounds good enough, and the wake-up light works wonderfully.

While the design isn’t quite at the level of the Somneo HF3750 discussed next, the price point of this sunrise radio alarm is more reasonable than the Somneo.

HeimVision Sunrise Alarm Clock

Key Points at a Glance

  • Includes authentic dawn simulation with color-morphing light
  • Provides realistic, 20-step sunrise simulation
  • Comes with 7 alarm sounds
  • Decent-quality digital FM Radio Included
  • Has settings for 4 different alarm times
  • Pairs with Alexa, and has an App for control

The Details

The HeimVision Sunrise Alarm Clock is a great choice for those who don’t want to jump to the price point Philips targets, but who still want a great quality wake up light and radio. This wake-up light has the realistic dawn simulation featured on the high-end Philips lights but is priced at a reasonable level.

The design and aesthetics are fine. They’re not as good as Philips’ design, but they are far and away better than most regular alarm clocks on the market.

The HeimVision has some great user experience options, as well. These include 4 different alarm time options, an adjustable wake-up light time, and a USB charging port.

You’ll have the choice of one of 7 alarm noises to wake up to, and you can also wake up to the FM Radio. The quality of the FM Radio sound is perhaps not quite as good as the Philips radios, but it’s definitely a step up from the low-end radios on this list.

The Bottom Line

The HeimVision is an excellent choice if you don’t want to spend a fortune on a sunrise alarm clock radio. The price point is great on this one, and the sunrise alarm is realistic and pleasant. You’ll wake up naturally at any time of night with this alarm clock.

HeimVision is basically a Chinese-made knock off of the Philips lights. But unlike the lower end models on this list, they do a great job hitting the most important features and keeping the price low.

Warmhoming Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock

Warmhoming Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock

Key Points at a Glance

  • Inexpensive Wake-Up Light
  • Does Not Have a Color-Temperature Changing System
  • Includes a decent-quality FM Radio
  • Light and clock display can be shut down completely

The Details

Warmhoming has a winning listing with this wake-up light and alarm clock. It’s positioned at an aggressive price point and has a reasonably attractive design and aesthetic. The color temperature of the light doesn’t change, and consequently, this system doesn’t do a great job of simulating the dawn.

However, for those who don’t want to spend a ton on their wake-up light, the Warmhoming alarm is a good budget-friendly choice.

The included FM Radio works well and is pretty easy to use. You can choose to have the radio be the sound that triggers when the alarm goes off, or you can choose one of the 8 included nature sounds.

30 minutes before your scheduled alarm time, the light will turn on at its lowest brightness setting and slowly brighten for the next 30 minutes. At the time of your alarm, it will reach full brightness and trigger the sound you’ve chosen. This can be the radio if you like.

This sunrise alarm clock does include various color options, so if you want your light to glow blue, green, or purple, it can do that. What it can’t do is morph from red to blue, as some of the other lights on this list will do.

The Bottom Line

The Warmhoming Sunrise Alarm Clock Radio is a reasonable choice for those on a budget. If you don’t want to spend a lot, and want a combination of a radio and wake-up light, this is an ok choice. It’s definitely lower quality than the higher-end models, but it is functional and useful.

hOmeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock

hOmeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock

Key Points at a Glance

  • Inexpensive Sunrise Alarm Clock
  • Includes 8 color options
  • Doesn’t morph between colors for full dawn simulation
  • Decent-quality FM Radio included
  • Light and clock can be turned off completely

The Details

hOmeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock is the cheapest option on our list, though the offering is pretty decent here. The overall aesthetic of the hOmeLabs alarm clock is a little bit clunky, but it still has a similar look to some of the nicer clocks.

Like the Warmhoming alarm clock, this unit has various color options, but it can’t morph from red/orange dawn light to full spectrum, blue daylight. Additionally, the brightness on the “lowest” setting is fairly bright — some will find it enough to wake them up alone. It will run for 30 minutes, gradually brightening to full brightness.

For these reasons, the sunrise simulation isn’t amazing.

Additionally, the FM Radio isn’t great. It’s a digital radio, and the user interface is a bit clunky. Also, the antenna doesn’t work great.

The Bottom Line

If you’re on a sharp budget, the hOmeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock is worth investgating. But honestly, it’s better to spend a little bit more on one of the better alarm clock radios that will provide a much higher-quality experience.

It is functional, but you may want to pass this one by.

Philips Somneo HF3650

Philips Somneo HF3750

Key Points at a Glance

  • Beautiful design, but expensive
  • Color-morphing light is very realistic
  • Includes USB Charger Port
  • Has 7 wake-up noises
  • Includes a digital FM Radio

The Details

The Philips Somneo HF3650 looks beautiful. It’s awesome. But ouch, this wake-up light is expensive! The aesthetic is top notch, but on the other hand, the aesthetic on the Philips HF3520 is really nice as well!

And yes, there are a few extra features on this light such as more audio sounds, a USB charging port, and a meditation breathing setting. But these additional features don’t really justify the additional cost of the Somneo 3650.

The dawn simulation system is essentially the same as the HF3520. The Somneo morphs between 20 steps of color changing light, from orange to bright daylight blue. It works great and is quite realistic.

The FM Radio is the same as what is found on the HF3520. It sounds good, and the user interface is decent. You can use it to wake up, to go to sleep, or just leave it on to listen to during the day.

The Bottom Line

If you love the design and aesthetic of the Somneo (and I do!) this is a great choice. It looks like a sci-fi movie prop. It’s very cool. But other than the aesthetic, there’s not enough to justify the additional cost over the Philips HF3520.

  • SMART FEATURES: midnight lamp, FM radio, phone charging dock, power...
  • MOOD AND ENERGY: proven to give you an easy and energetic wake-up and...
  • WIND DOWN ROUTINE: RelaxBreathe light-guided breathing helps you relax...

Conclusion

Ultimately, the Philips Wake Up Lights are the best wake up light radios on the market. But they’re pretty expensive, especially as you get up to the higher-end models like the Somneo. I would suggest most buyers should stick to the middle-tier Wake-Up Light HF3520. If that’s too much for your budget, go for the HeimVision Wake-Up Light. It’s only a little more expensive than the low-end options, but is much better quality.
