Monday shampoo seems to be everywhere lately! Dye to a sustained social media campaign, owner Jaimee Upton has made Monday hair care into a beauty juggernaut.

Since its launch in 2020, Monday shampoo has rocketed in popularity and has quickly become one of the most recognizable hair care brands across the world.

But as a result, negative pudmblicity is expected. And Monday shampoo has recently received its fair share, including reports of hair loss by some users.

Does Monday shampoo cause hair loss? There’s no real scientific evidence that Monday shampoo causes hair loss, and people experience hair loss from so many different factors, it’s hard to isolate without real scientific rigor.

Still, there appears to be some concern, and a plausible issue regarding silicone in the formula.

In this article, we will try to explain the facts regarding this famous hair care product and if it actually can cause hair loss.

Does Monday Shampoo Cause Hair Loss?

Monday shampoo

Despite the number of customers that swear by Monday hair care products causing hair loss, there is yet to be solid evidence that proves this is a fact. This is similar to the cases of other high-quality shampoos and reports of hair loss, including Native Shampoo and Maui Shampoo. No solid evidence, but many anecdotal reports.

The Monday hair care range (similar to many other hair care products) uses silicone as an ingredient. While silicone is beneficial, it is a chemical that is also designed to be used only for a period before being removed.

In the case of hair care, this is usually the rinse after the treatment. The accumulation of silicone in the hair or scalp over a period is not recommended. This chemical is known to dry out its surfaces over a while

The Potential Issue

Monday shampoo is vegan and cruelty-free. It prides itself on modern formulas with a focus on only natural ingredients. It is free of many of the common chemical ingredients of concern found in most shampoos: Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Parabens, and DMDM Hydantoin — something OGX shampoo just removed from its formulation.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) – is a chemical used in soaps, shower gels, toothpaste, etc., working as a surfactant that traps dirt and oils so that they can easily be rinsed away. It’s also responsible for creating the luxurious lathering effect that comes with shampooing.

SLS is great at removing dirt but can also damage a sensitive scalp.

Parabens – are preservatives that are meant to prevent bacteria or mold from building. In the case of your hair, it’s used to control oils and debris that make up dirt in hair. Similar to SLS, parabens have been found to cause damage to the hair and scalp, especially in larger quantities.

Using all-natural ingredients and remaining environmentally aware has become essential for all product manufacturers. However, replacing chemicals like SLS and parabens with natural ingredients is often not an easy task. These chemicals have been used for a reason: They work!

In the case above, removing SLS from the equation means that when the silicone treats the hair, it may not be entirely removed when being rinsed. This will dry your hair and scalp over time. Scalps that are damaged by dryness may display the following issues:

  • Thinning of hair
  • Lack/ slow down in reproduction of new follicles
  • Total loss or damage to the surface which may affect new hair formation

In addition, hair with higher amounts of silicone present is more susceptible to burning when coming in contact with heat. Use a heat protectant if heat styling!

There is a tradeoff in the lack of SLS. No SLS is good for your hair, but it makes removing silicone harder. If you’re using Monday shampoos, you should really focus on rinsing the shampoo out completely.

The Stats

Monday Shampoo SLS Free

Monday hair care products are well reviewed. And like many product sites, the customer reviews are mainly positive and compliment the brand. However, as you go deeper, you’re likely to find that public platform review results show a different picture.

Here’s an overview of the results from Monday hair care products public platform customer reviews:

  • Roughly half of all customers provided a 5* rating, with many expressing expectations exceeding results
  • Around 20% provided a 4* rating
  • Around 20% provided a rating of 2* or less, with many expressing firm discontent with the results of the products

One should bear in mind that these are customer reviews and not proven facts. Notably, among the negative reviews received were several salon owners and hairstylists that shared their poor experiences with using Monday hair care products with their customers.

Monday hair care has responded to many of its critics, reaffirming that they are 100% transparent in the product composition and that the silicone used in its product is similar to and, in some instances, better than many salon-produced options.

Monday also mentioned that they feel that salons are just upset due to a loss in sales of their products. With customers flocking to relatively cheap Monday shampoos, salons have a harder time selling higher-end, and higher-markup, shampoos.

Most Common Feedback

Among the negative reviews, the following were the most common issues experienced:

  • Severe drying of the hair and scalp
  • Damaged hair and tips
  • Hair is more susceptible to burning/melting when heated
  • Differing levels of hair loss

While the most common positives noticed were:

  • Increased volume
  • Improved texture and feel
  • Smoother and silkier appearance
  • Accentuates color/ highlights

Interestingly, the two points that were consistent throughout the positive and negative reviewers were:

  • The best results were achieved when using Monday hair care products in conjunction with their regular shampoo
  • The Monday shampoo shows excellent results on coarse and frizzy hair types

Conclusion

Monday hair care products have fast become known as the salon-product alternative, sold at a fraction of the cost. The brand has generated a lot of customer interaction and a mixed bag of responses, with the vast majority of users expressing their satisfaction with the product.

Many of their negative reviews received were related to the products causing dry hair and hair loss which are noted bodily reactions to being exposed to higher levels of silicone for longer periods.

There is no solid evidence that this is the case, but leftover silicone could be a plausible issue. If you’re using Monday shampoo and experience hair loss, well, stop using it. If you are simply concerned, be sure you thoroughly rinse your hair when using it.
