How To Diffuse Curly Hair

Shark Hairdryer with Diffuser

If you’ve ever tried drying your curly hair without a diffuser, then you know the result will have been a frizzy blown-out mess.

And that’s the reason why diffusers are the most effective way to dry curly hair.

A diffuser is the one hairdryer attachment that will enhance your styling results. Diffusers already come included with many hairdryers on the market .

Diffuser Air Flow

They are designed to evenly distribute heat through your curls, which is the correct way to enhance your curl pattern.

If your hair dryer doesn’t have a diffuser included, then there are universal models available to buy  that will fit onto your current styling tool.

If you have a lot of hair, then you may want to get hold of a diffuser that has a bigger bowl to contain your larger volume of hair.

By using a diffuser, you’ll not only minimize a lot of frizz, but it gives you the power to define your curl definition the way nature intended.

But like anything, there is a right way of doing it. If you do it the wrong way, then you’ll end up with a frizzy bird’s nest on top of your head.

Read on to find out the five simple steps you can use that will give your curly locks plenty of definition and volume while protecting them from the heat.

The Diffusing Method

Using a Diffuser Diffuser

There are a few simple steps you can take that will optimize your diffusing technique. This will give your hair the best definition, while also minimizing frizz.

It will also reduce the drying time needed to stop hair from losing any moisture it needs.

1. Wet and Scrunch

Saturate your freshly washed hair with curly hair styling products, then scrunch out any excess water.

Don’t squeeze out all of the water, because keeping your hair as damp as possible will allow the diffusing process to eliminate any frizz.

2. Tip and Dry

Tipping your head upside down, place a section of your hair into the diffuser bowl and raise it up to about an inch away from your scalp. Then turn on the dryer on with the lowest pressure and heat setting.

Hold the diffuser bowl towards your scalp for about 30 seconds, then turn the dryer off.

Don’t move the diffuser bowl around while the dryer is on. Leave it in place.

This process will dry the section to about 80%.

3. Section and Repeat

Move on to another section of your hair and repeat the Tip and Dry process detailed in step 2.

When you have finished all sections with your head tipped forward, stand up, gently bend your neck to one side, and Tip and Dry again. And then do the other side.

4. Definition and Volume

Now it’s time to stop diffusing if you want to retain some moisture in your locks. You can even add some clips to your roots to encourage extra volume, then let your hair air dry completely.

Alternatively, you can keep using the diffuser while using your fingers at the roots to stimulate volume. Don’t rub your fingers together.

5. Shake and Go

When your hair is completely dry, fluff out your hair by using your fingers to shake out the roots. If you do this with your head upside down, it will give even more volume to your curly strands.

Keep scrunching the lengths to release the curl formed by your curly-haired styling products. Finally, give your head a shake so that your gorgeous curls fall naturally in place.

Hot Stuff

Many people avoid using hair dryers because of the damage heat can cause to already dry or brittle hair.

Unlike simply using a hairdryer on full power, though, adding a diffuser and using a low heat allows for the gentle dispersion of air out from the dryer to dry your curls without causing extra frizz while creating volume.

This means diffusers cause less harm to curly hair than simply using the hairdryer on its own.

However, the only way you’ll prevent any more damage to your curls is by using proper styling products that will help your hair to retain moisture, like heat protectants.

A great natural heat protectant you can use is Premium Nature’s Argan Oil Thermal Shield . Acting as a heat protectant, detangler, and leave-in conditioner, this all-natural argan oil product will protect hair from becoming dry and brittle when using your diffuser. It will leave your curls bouncy, shiny and defined.

Another option is Cantu’s Coconut Curling Cream . This curl activator has a creamy consistency that may be a bit too thick for those with thinner curly hair, although water can be added to disperse it easier onto your locks.

Free of mineral oil, silicones, sulfates, and parabens, it will provide your curls with more definition, as well as make them more bouncy.

Never use a heat treatment or curl activator that contains alcohol. Even when using a low heat, it will suck moisture out of your hair.

Make sure that the product includes an oil such as argan, coconut, shea, jojoba, or olive to keep your hair in the best condition.

In addition, you should avoid combing or brushing the products into your hair, which will pull out its natural curl pattern.

And be aware that these products will eventually expire, particularly if you don’t store them correctly.

And Finally…

If you’ve never attempted to diffuse your curly locks before, then these steps will help you along the way. But you’ll have to do it… over and over again.

Like everything, practice makes perfect when you learn how to diffuse curly hair.
