Tatcha is a popular line of cosmetics founded by Japanese-American businesswoman Vitoria Tsai. While Tatcha has received stellar reviews worldwide, one of the most commonly asked questions by customers has been, Is Tatcha cruelty-free? Or is it just another marketing gimmick?”

Unfortunately, many companies falsify reports or find loopholes to allow animal testing. In today’s post, we’re going to answer this question and validate the accuracy of Tatcha’s claims that they’re a true cruelty-free cosmetic company.

Is Tatcha Cruelty-Free?

While Tatcha claims to be 100% cruelty-free, so do many other big-name brands. In the cosmetic industry, it’s common for some businesses to lie through their teeth or find legal loopholes that allow them to inadvertently test their products on animals while still claiming to be “cruelty-free.”

So, we decided to dig a little bit deeper to figure out is Tatcha cruelty-free in the true sense of the term, or is it all just a scam?

Tatcha Doesn’t Test Products On Animals

The cruel practice of animal testing often results in harmful chemicals being applied to captive animals’ skin, which can cause severe physical damage. Additionally, the psychological damage of being kept in captivity, deprived of safety, shelter, and a quality diet has its own consequences.

As it turns out, Tatcha does not test ANY of its products on animals. They’re one of the few cosmetic companies that have been officially certified by PETA.

PETA’s certification process is intensive and rigorous, so this is excellent proof that Tatcha is an honest, genuinely cruelty-free company.

Tatcha Doesn’t Test Products In Countries Without Animal Cruelty Laws

Tatcha is dedicated to its commitment to cruelty-free testing. This means that they don’t try to find loopholes by testing unlabeled products in foreign countries that lack substantial laws against animal cruelty.

Unfortunately, many other cosmetic brands will send their products to third-party testers in foreign countries where no such laws exist. Furthermore, due to complex confidentiality contracts, the testing organization cannot disclose information to the public.

Unfortunately, this provides a loophole for the manufacturer to claim that they “had no knowledge” of the testing practices. Essentially, they can still advertise their product as cruelty-free when it really isn’t.

Thankfully, Tatcha doesn’t use these dishonest marketing tactics. This is one of the key factors contributing to them being one of the most highly-reviewed young cosmetic companies. Although they officially launched in 2017, the brand had grown into a global sensation!

Is Tatcha Vegan?

Many consumers shopping for a cruelty-free brand are also searching for a vegan brand. Vegan cosmetic production means that no animal products are used at any point during production.

This means no animal-derived fats, oils, or powders. It also means the company won’t deal with providers who contribute to animal cruelty or reduce animal populations.

Unfortunately, Tatcha is not a vegan company.

Although none of their products are tested on animals, some of their makeup and cosmetics do contain animal-derived products.  This is similar to the policies of other companies like Mario Badescu and The Ordinary.

Conclusion

Overall, Tatcha is a great company to buy your cosmetics from. Although they aren’t vegan, they are committed to being 100% cruelty-free.

In addition to this, they also donate a portion of their profits to Room to Read, which helps young girls in African and Asian countries learn to read and get access to mentorship and education.
