If you are asked to choose which makeup products would be included in your top 3 products, would you include mascara? Many people would as it helps open up their eyes.

A lot of people are fond of mascaras and may include them as part of their makeup routine but is it bad to wear mascara every day

The mascara itself isn’t bad for your eyelashes when you use it every day. However, how you use the mascara and how you remove it at the end could potentially cause irritation and damage to your eyelashes.

That’s why using mascara every day may… or may not be bad for you.

Let’s break it down below.

Is It Bad To Wear Mascara Every Day?

No matter whether your beauty routine is 20 seconds per day or 2 hours per day, mascara is almost certainly on the list! It is one of the quickest and easiest way to improve your look.

But are you sure that it is okay to swipe that mascara on your eyelashes every single day?

Well, that depends on how you use your mascara.

First of all, mascara is formulated to be safe for your eyelashes (no bat poop involved!). However, there is still a risk of damaging your eyelashes when you use your mascara every day. That’s because, at the end of the day, you have to remove the mascara and cleanse your face.

It is the improper removal of mascara, especially waterproof mascara, that could lead to eyelash damage. Waterproof mascara  can be tougher to remove.

That’s why some people tend to rub their eyes while removing it.

It is the improper removal of mascara, especially waterproof mascara, that could lead to eyelash damage.

However, that is not the best practice when it comes to removing mascara. You have to be as gentle as possible. Avoid tugging or rubbing your eyelashes or else you could weaken or damage them.

There are oil-based makeup removers available in the market. These are your best bet when it comes to removing waterproof mascara. As an alternative, makeup professionals also suggest using castor oil.

Oil-based solutions help remove your water-based mascara easily without having to rub too vigorously. The use of castor oil also doubles as a nourishing product for your eyelashes.

Although there are makeup removers you can use, it is still possible to have a buildup of the product if you tend to use mascara every day and not properly remove it.

That build-up could end up blocking the glands responsible for oiling up the lashes. Eventually, that could develop into a sty or irritation.

Additionally, if the mascara gets into your eye, it could also cause irritation and even infection. An infection could happen especially when you are using an old tube of mascara.

Take A Break From Mascara Use

If you’ve been using mascara every day, you could feel uncomfortable when you take a break from using it. It may seem uncomfortable because of the way your eyelashes look — but they’ll surely thank you for it.

When you stop using mascara for a while, you will notice changes in your eyelashes but in a good way. That’s because you don’t need to put them through the rigorous process of removing the mascara at the end of the day.

Taking a week off mascara can also help your natural eyelashes to grow healthier. You can further improve the experience by using castor oil on your eyelashes to help keep them nourished.

If you really can’t live without the mascara, you could also choose to switch from waterproof to non-waterproof, at least on some days.

Tips To Safely Using Mascara Every Day

Although there are risks, many of us still like to use mascara every day. To help minimize the possible damage, here are a few things to remember.

Gently Remove Your Mascara

When removing your mascara, make sure to do it as gently as you can. If you are using a waterproof formula, you could use an oil-based makeup remover to do the task.

Place some of the makeup removers on a cotton pad and place it over one eye without moving it for a few seconds. This helps soak the mascara so it can be easily removed by gently wiping the pad across the eye.

If there is some leftover mascara, you can get a q-tip and add makeup remover to it. This could help you better target the area where there is still mascara on your eyelashes.

Remember that rubbing your eyelashes excessively can damage them and make them brittle. So avoid that at all costs.

Use Non-Waterproof Formula

Waterproof mascara is great because it can better withstand your tears or sweat. However, it is also more difficult to remove.

If you really want to use mascara every day, you could occasionally swap your waterproof mascara for a non-waterproof one. Just leave your waterproof mascara for special occasions.

In that way, it would be easier for you to remove the mascara. That helps prevent product buildup on your eyelashes, which doesn’t only potentially block the oil glands for your eyelashes but also harbor bacteria.

Use Castor Oil

One way to help your lashes become healthier is to use castor oil on them. Although this doesn’t instantly make your eyelash healthy, using them regularly can help.

Some people claim that castor oil  can help your lashes grow. However, there are no studies that prove that this is true.

However, you could still benefit well from using castor oil. That’s because this can coat the hair shaft of your eyelashes to prevent them from dehydrating.

It helps trap the moisture to prevent your lashes from being brittle and dry. When used regularly, you could observe less breakage of the eyelashes in about three weeks.

Full effects need more time and could take a few months more to show up. Do make sure that the castor oil you use is safe to use near the eyes. These are usually the cold-pressed and certified organic ones.

Don’t Forget To Remove Your Mascara Before Bed

After a long day, it can be really easy to fall asleep on the couch or flop into bed without fully removing your makeup. But removing that crusty, ultra-dry leftover mascara from yesterday will be even more damaging.

Take your mascra off at the end of the night.
