Dermaplaning is a simple process that can help you achieve smoother skin. It removes the vellus hair on the face, as well as the top layer of dead skin cells. This makes the skin look brighter and smoother.

With a layer of dead skin cells and the vellus hair removed, your face might feel a bit more raw or bare because there is much less coverage on the skin. With that, you may have been wondering can you wear makeup after dermaplaning? How long after dermaplaning can I wear makeup?

The answer to that question is yes, you can certainly use makeup after dermaplaning. However, you shouldn’t apply makeup right after treatment.

In this article, we will dig into why you shouldn’t immediately apply makeup right after the dermaplaning treatment. We’ll also discuss when it is best to apply makeup and what is best to apply on skin that has recently gone through dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning and Makeup

Dermaplaning Skin

Have you ever applied a foundation under a bright light? Then you’ve also seen the fuzzy hairs on your face. They become more noticeable with makeup. And some of us just don’t like how it looks. The skin is not as smooth as it could be.

Through dermaplaning, the peach fuzz, aka the vellus hair, on your face is removed. This makes the skin much smoother.

You’ll easily notice that it is much easier to apply makeup to your face due to the absence of it. You can achieve a more flawless look with the absence of the peach fuzz.

Additionally, makeup is much easier to apply because it easily glides on the skin. You don’t really have to use as much makeup because dermaplaning improves the appearance of the skin.

The blade sloughs off dead skin cells and effectively exfoliates the face.

You’ll end up with less caking of your makeup because there are no hairs that could texturize the face.

Can You Wear Makeup After Dermaplaning?

It can be tempting to try and wear your makeup right after a dermaplaning session just to see how smooth your face is. However, that isn’t a great idea.

Even if you can use makeup after dermaplaning, that doesn’t mean you should do it immediately after the procedure.

Dermaplaning doesn’t have downtime. You can continue with your work or other activities after the treatment (but avoid the sun, and avoid the sauna). Your face may also not show a significant difference right after the procedure.

Dermaplaning can be helpful for tackling acne scars.

However, you can still observe some redness or dryness in some areas due to the exfoliation process. This is normal and typically goes away unless things have gone awry.

Even if you can’t really see any difference, you must remember that a layer of your skin has been removed. This makes your skin more exposed and sensitive.

Using makeup on your skin in this condition could cause further skin irritation.

How Long After Dermaplaning Can I Wear Makeup?

It is best to skip wearing makeup for about 24 to 48 hours. This should give your skin enough time to recover from the dermaplaning process.

What Should You Do After Dermaplaning?

After dermaplaning, the skin barrier is more vulnerable. Some of the dead skin cells plus the vellus hair has been removed.

Instead of using makeup on your face, you should be using a moisturizer on it!

Moisturize

Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid

The last step in dermaplaning is moisturizing your skin. There are different serums that can be used to soak your face with moisturizing products. Most use those with hyaluronic acid to help boost moisture on the skin.

Moisturizers can also help prevent your skin from feeling itchy and irritated.

Cover Up

Another thing to remember is that your skin is more vulnerable to harsh elements outside, including UV light. That means you shouldn’t skip using sunscreen for your face!

Apart from that, you can also use physical barriers like an umbrella to keep your face shaded and to prevent sunburn.

At this stage, it is easier for the skin to get sunburned because of the removed dead skin cells and hair on the skin’s surface.

Skip the tanning for a couple of days.

Take It Easy

Apart from sensitivity to UV radiation, the skin could also be more sensitive to heat. For about 3 days, it is best to avoid doing any activities that heat up your skin and makes you sweat. Don’t go to saunas or steam rooms.

Also, skip the heavy workouts.

Avoid the Chemicals

The skin can also be more sensitive to other chemicals or ingredients. That is why you should avoid going for a swim right after the dermaplaning session. Chlorine can be irritating to the skin, even more so after dermaplaning.

Also, make sure that the skin care products you use don’t contain harsh chemicals. Although your skin can tolerate them before, it may not be able to tolerate them as much after the treatment session.

It is best to stick to gentle products when cleansing your face and moisturizing it. Take advantage of this time to use serums as they will easily be absorbed by the skin.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Protect your skin from physical damage as best you can. Scratching your face is a bad idea. It may irritate the skin, and you may also introduce bacteria that can infect the bare skin.

This is one of the areas where dermaplaning can go wrong.

When washing the face, avoid using scrubs whether it is chemical scrubs for peeling or physical scrubs that help exfoliate the skin.

Healthy Skin is the Goal

With proper care of your skin after the procedure, you can expect to look fresher and younger after the treatment. Your makeup will look better and your face will look flawless due to dermaplaning.

Although dermaplaning produces great results, your appointments should be properly spaced. Doing it too often can also harm the skin so it is best to wait for about 4-6 weeks before you go through another dermaplaning procedure.

Final Thoughts

Dermaplaning is an effective procedure that could improve the way makeup looks on your skin. This is because it gets rid of the peach fuzz, or vellus hair, that can make your makeup look cakey. After 3-4 weeks, that hair will start to grow back.

However, putting on makeup right after the procedure isn’t a good idea. Makeup can irritate the skin in its sensitive state. The skin should be allowed to calm down and heal for at least 24-48  hours before using makeup.

Additionally, there are also some things that you should do after dermaplaning instead of using makeup. Keeping the skin hydrated and moisturized will prevent redness and dryness.

Lastly, you should also make sure that you keep the skin well protected against the sun and heat.
