Do You Wear a Bra for a Spray Tan?

Waiting at Salon

Whether or not you wear a bra is entirely up to you. Basically, it depends on whether you like the tan line look, or if you prefer the nude tanning look.

Keep in mind that the spray tan solution won’t magically permeate your bra. If you decide to wear a bra while you’re getting spray tanned, then you’ll have to accept that you’re going to end up with tan lines.

Of course, not everyone has an issue with tan lines, and some people actually want to create the tan line effect.

On the other hand, some people go for a spray tan so they don’t have to deal with tan lines in the first place, so whether or not you wear a bra is up to personal preference and the effect you’d like to create with your tan.

There are a few things to consider if you intend to wear a bra when you’re about to step into the spray tan tent. The main thing that you’ll want to account for is the possibility that your bra will end up stained by the tanning solution.

Remember, most spray tan solutions tend to adhere to specific fabrics.

Here’s a short video showing how a spray tan works with a bra, and the kind of bra to wear.

What Kind of Bra Should I Wear During my Spray Tan?

Most tanning solutions will stain fabrics like nylon, silk, wool, and leather. The biggest concern is that the solution stains nylon, which is one of the most common materials that is used in undergarments like bras.

Since the tanning solution is dark, it will be a lot more prevalent on lighter fabrics.

If you have an old, light bra that you don’t mind staining, then you can wear that and just throw it out or keep it specifically as your spray tanning bra after that. On the other hand, if you only have a limited number of bras, you’ll want to choose your darkest one, as it won’t be as obvious that it got stained.

In the worst case, you can go out and buy a new, cheap, dark bra specifically for spray tanning.

Some spray tan parlors may have temporary paper bras that you can wear while you’re getting your spray tan applied. But these won’t typically fit well, and they won’t be available at all salons.

If you’d like to get an idea of what your spray tan salon has available when it comes to temporary undergarments, you can always give them a call to figure it out. At the very least, many will provide you with a paper g-string that can be disposed of after your tan is complete.

The amount of spray tan solution that gets on your bra will depend on the skill level of your tanning technician. A more skilled technician will be able to isolate the spray tanning solution from your bra, but there’s still a pretty decent chance that your bra will end up somewhat stained.

This means that you can expect to find tanning solution stains near the periphery of your bra, around the areas that are closest to your skin. On the other hand, less talented technicians will leave your bra stained enough that it’s noticeable.

Can I Wear a Bra After a Spray Tan?

Most of the time, you’ll want to avoid wearing a bra after you get a spray tan done. But it’s understandable that you may sometimes need to if you have a crowded schedule. The main recommendation that we’d make is that you should schedule your appointment so you have some free time afterward to let the solution set.

Wearing a bra shortly after having a spray tan applied will likely cause dark spots near where the band of the bra contacts your skin. This is because the solution gets rubbed into your skin and concentrated in those areas, creating dark spots that will make your tan look unnatural.

How Long After a Spray Tan Can I Wear a Bra?

Ideally, you’d wait for 24 hours after a spray tan to wear a bra. But that’s often too difficult for many women. If you can’t do that, try to give the spray tan at least four hours to set before you apply a bra. And if you go this route, be extra cautious about the bra you choose to wear.

Reducing the Impact of a Bra on your Spray Tan

If your schedule is too packed for you to get some free time after your spray tan and you have to wear a bra, there are a few things that you can do to minimize how it impacts your spray tan. Ideally, you should be wearing a strapless bra or a bandeau that will minimize the amount of contact with your skin.

When you hook your bra after getting a spray tan, do it carefully and gently to minimize your chances of creating dark spots on your skin.

One of the worst things you can do when wearing a bra after a spray tan is hooking it in the front and then rotating it around. This will create dark spots and uneven color all around your body.

If you have trouble hooking your bra in reverse, you can always get your spray tan technician to help you out with it.

What Should I Wear After a Spray Tan?

Since the tanning solution can come off of your skin and rub into your clothes, you’ll want to wear loose-fitting darker clothes that are less likely to get stained by it.

Even if you wear darker clothes, you should typically wear older clothes that you don’t mind staining slightly, since at least some of the solution will come off.

Also, avoid tight clothes wherever possible. You’ll want to wear loose-fitting clothes.

Ideally, your clothes should be made of cotton, as cotton will make it more difficult for the spray tan solution to stick to your clothes.

Instead, the spray tan solution will stick to your skin, where it will help your spray tan last longer.
