Are you trying to switch to a more environmentally-friendly way of living? There are plenty of things that you could do to lessen the amount of trash you produce out of your household.

One of them is simply switching to shampoo bars instead of using traditional liquid shampoo in bottles. But apart from being environmentally friendly, there are lots of shampoo bars that are great for the hair because of their formulation.

The reason for that is that shampoo bars are concentrated. The liquid shampoo contains a lot of water to get to the consistency.

One of the most common questions asked by those who are planning to make the switch is “how long do shampoo bars last?” Shampoo bars typically last for somewhere around 60 washes, but there are lots of variables that can impact that estimate.

Unfortunately, there is no definite answer to how long a bar will last, because there are different factors that could affect how long the shampoo bars last.

We’ll discuss those factors below.

Shampoo Bars 101

Shampoo Bar

A shampoo bar  is a shampoo that is in solid form. It is formulated to function just like regular shampoo which helps clean hair and gets rid of excess oil, dirt, and buildup.

One of the main differences between a shampoo bar from your regular shampoo is that it doesn’t contain water. It is in solid form and comes as a compressed bar or brick, like a bar of soap.

Some companies may produce it in various shapes for marketing purposes.

One of the main differences between a shampoo bar from your regular shampoo is that it doesn’t contain water.

The liquid shampoo has been quite popular since the 1940s and is still available today. Shampoo bars on the other hand are quite newer in the market but are currently gaining popularity due to sustainability.

A shampoo bar is quite similar to a soap bar. You simply rub the soap bar with your hands to lather it up and you can use that to lather up your hair just like you would use a regular shampoo. After using the shampoo, you can rinse your hair with water too.

How Long Do Shampoo Bars Last?

We would all love to know precisely how long a shampoo bar can last but unfortunately, we can’t tell you exactly. Just like soap bars, there are various manufacturers of shampoo bars, and each one has different ingredients, so they differ from each other.

Additionally, different factors could affect how long your shampoo bar lasts. To help you estimate how long your shampoo bar will last, we’ll discuss those different factors.

1. Length Of Hair

How long is your hair? Most people use shampoo throughout the full length of their hair. That would mean that if you have longer hair, then you should expect to use more product each time you wash your hair.

However, many would suggest that there is no need to shampoo the entire length of your hair. Most suggest that shampooing the area near the roots would be enough because that is more likely the area where excess oils are present.

Nevertheless, not all people still do this. It’s really up you to if you wish to use the shampoo all over your hair or if you simply want to use it on the area towards the roots.

2. Your Hair Type

Aside from the length of your hair, your hair type will also be a factor that determines how long your shampoo bar lasts. If your hair is thicker or less porous, then it might require more of the product.

One of the main reasons why people would shampoo their hair is because they like to remove the excess oil or oily appearance of the hair.

If your hair tends to be oily, then you might have to use more of this product to effectively remove the oiliness.

3. Size Or Weight Of The Shampoo Bar

As we’ve mentioned, there are a variety of shampoo bars available in the market today. Aside from the ingredient list of the shampoo bars, they may differ in size or weight too!

Naturally, those that are of bigger sizes are more likely to last longer than those smaller sizes. Remember that the size of the shampoo bar is just one of the factors and other shampoo bars can still last longer even if they are smaller depending on how they are used and stored.

4. How Often Is It Used

Another factor that could affect how long your shampoo bar lasts is how often it is used. Do you wash your hair and shampoo it every day? How many people are using the shampoo bar in your household?

As the shampoo bar is used often by more people, it would be less likely to last long.

If you’d want to compare a shampoo bar to regular liquid shampoo, a 500 ml shampoo could be compared to an 85-gram shampoo bar. They could both last for about 40-60 washes.

5. How You Use And Store Your Shampoo Bar

To use your shampoo bar, you have to use it with water and make a lather out of it, just like you would if you were using a soap bar. The lather produced would be used to cleanse the hair.

After using the shampoo bar, it would be best to rinse it out with water and then store it in a dry place. Make sure that it doesn’t soak in water when you store it or else it will dissolve just like soap does.

Many of the shampoo bars come in their tin storage cases  and you can use those to store them after use. Remember that the dryer you store them, the longer they will last.

6. The Brand And Ingredients Of The Shampoo Bar

There are many manufacturers of shampoo bars, and each one has different ingredients.

Different manufacturers have their formulas. Some shampoo bars are quicker to dissolve when exposed to water than others. That’s why you should keep them dry after using them.

Some shampoo bars will outlast others simply because of their composition. If they easily dissolve in water, that may cause them to run out faster but that doesn’t mean that they are not good for the hair.

It just means that you have to be more careful in storing them so they don’t easily run out.

How To Make Shampoo Bars Last Longer

Do you want to make your shampoo bar last longer? Who wouldn’t?

To get the most out of your shampoo bar and make it last longer, you should know how to store it properly.

The key to making your shampoo bar last is to avoid storing it near damp places where it could be soaked. If it keeps on getting wet even if you don’t use it, the shampoo bar dissolves little by little.

The key to making your shampoo bar last is to avoid storing it near damp places where it could be soaked. If it keeps on getting wet even if you don’t use it, the shampoo bar dissolves little by little.

One of the most effective ways to make sure that it is dry is to store it in an area where there is drainage, ample airflow, and dry air. When those conditions are met, you could preserve the shampoo bars.

If you don’t then the shampoo bar can become soggy due to the humid conditions of its environment. It’s tough for things left in the shower to dry out completely… loofahs are the same way.

What most people do is first use a soap dish with drainage to remove the excess water and allow air to flow.

Once the shampoo bar is dry, it could be kept in a tin container to protect it from water. Many shampoo bars come packaged in tin containers for storage. These can be conveniently used while traveling.

Another possible storage for shampoo bars is the shampoo nets . These are made with holes so you can simply hang the shampoo bar to allow them to dry.

Be mindful that water and moisture aren’t the only things that could easily deteriorate your shampoo bar. Heat could also be the culprit so make sure to store them in a cool dry place and away from direct heat.

Shampoo Bars And Expiration

It is common for people to buy multiple variants of shampoo bars because they want to try them out. What if you got a little bit overboard and bought a lot, not realizing that they could last you months of use?

The good news is that shampoo bars may still be usable for up to 12 months upon your purchase, and maybe longer if left unopened. Different manufacturers may have different expiration dates, depending on the ingredients that they used.

Usually, it is the oils in the shampoo bars that go bad or rancid. The good thing is that they usually develop an unpleasant odor.

Apart from that, you should check the color as well. A fading color may also indicate that the shampoo bar is expired. Sometimes, the color may not fade but some parts may become discolored.
