Hair oiling is a great way to improve your hair health. It has plenty of pros like moisturization and improved blood circulation of the scalp. It can also help with dandruff.

However, oiling the scalp may not be for everyone, because there could be side effects that could happen when you oil your scalp.

Some people experience scalp itch after oiling. Frustrating!

Have you ever experienced an itchy scalp due to oiling? There could be varied reasons why that happens.

Let’s get to know why that might be happening and what you can do to avoid itching of the scalp when oiling it.

Scalp Itch After Oiling: What Causes It?

Many people are now discovering the benefits of oiling the scalp. It is a good way to help improve hair and scalp health.

Applying oil to your scalp can help hydrate the scalp so that it isn’t too dry. Washing the hair can cause the scalp to become dry and by using oil on the scalp, you can help prevent that.

Apart from being beneficial to the scalp, applying oil is a great way to improve the hair and make it healthier. Usually, natural oil is selected and applied to the scalp by massaging it.

This technique doesn’t just nourish the scalp and hair, it massages the scalp to help with blood circulation.

Although applying oil on the scalp is beneficial for most people, there are some people who don’t do well with scalp oils. Applying oil on your scalp when it is already oily or if you are already suffering from dandruff could lead to seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is the condition of the scalp wherein scaly patches develop. It could present as having stubborn dandruff plus red skin.

This condition causes the scalp to itch.

Another reason why your scalp could itch when you apply oil is that it is dirty. When your hair already has a lot of dust, dirt, or buildup, it could be further irritated with the oil. This may be why it itches when you add oil to it.

Some people may have allergies to the oil that is used. Make sure you properly select the oil that you use on your hair so that it doesn’t itch upon application.

How To Apply Oil And Still Avoid Itching

Some people think that oiling the scalp just isn’t for them because it causes their scalp to itch. However, it is possible that they are just applying it incorrectly, leading to scalp itch.

If you find that oiling your scalp makes it itch, first take a look at how you apply the oil to your scalp. First of all, properly select the oil to use. The usual ones would include delicious-smelling argan oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil.

Make sure that the oils you use are of great quality. If not, impurities in the oil could cause your scalp to itch.

When it comes to coconut oil, you shouldn’t just purchase supermarket oil. There are others that are better suited to your hair.

Finding good quality oil helps ensure that you aren’t just merely adding any oil to the hair but providing it with nutrients. This helps make sure your scalp and hair will benefit well from oiling.

First of all, you have to make sure that your scalp is clean and dry. Having your hair washed the day or night before is the best time to apply the oil (and no need to wash it every day!).

Next is to make sure that you apply a little at a time. Use the dropper to make it easier to apply the oil to the scalp then massage it using your fingertips. Massaging for 10 minutes will help with better circulation in the scalp too.

You can apply more oil to your hair and use a brush so that it spreads evenly. Leave the oil on your hair and scalp for about 30 minutes so the nutrients are efficiently absorbed.

Lastly, don’t forget that you have to wash your hair afterward. This removes the residue while still providing your hair with the nutrients from the oil that you used.
