Almost everyone loves how they look and feel with a sun-kissed glow. And that’s why tanning is so popular with many, whether they lounge in the sun, visit tanning beds regularly, or fake it with a spray tan to boost confidence.

Being blessed to have been born with more melanated skin, I prefer to spend time in sunnier climes where my skin can maintain a golden glow, which is a perk of my digital nomad lifestyle. And if I have to spend long periods of time in the winter cold, I have had tanning bed sessions to boost my good feeling vibes.

But could a fake spray tan also do the job for women like me? Read on to find out about spray tan for black skin.

Spray Tan For Black Skin

Curly hair

I’ve got to admit it until recently I would have never considered using spray tan on my cafe latte-colored skin.

I love lounging in the sun once in a while to keep a consistent sun-kissed glow, and will top up the UV with a tanning bed session if I need a vitamin D boost during the winter months.

But while investigating whether or not spray tanning worked for black skin, I was pleased to find out that yes… it does! In fact, fake tan basically works on all shades and tones of skin, including dark skin.

Even the black Victoria’s Secret models get spray tans before strutting down the catwalk.

All of the models are spray-tanned to get the same “angel glow”, while they are also highlighted and contoured in places to create the illusion of more muscle definition.

The technicians custom-mix shades to suit the darker-skinned angels.

Using spray tans for black skin doesn’t necessarily mean you need to make your skin darker. You can use them to enhance your natural skin tone and even out any imperfections.

Using spray tans for black skin doesn’t necessarily mean you need to make your skin darker. You can use them to enhance your natural skin tone and even out any imperfections.

By choosing a shade of spray tan closer to your natural shade, it will make the most of your natural complexion and give it a radiant glow.

Most spray tans will last for around 10 days when you prepare your skin beforehand and nourish you skin properly post-tan. Read on to find out the best way to keep your glow for longer.

Color Matching Your Skin Tone and Undertone

B Tanned

Choosing the right shade for your skin tone is an important part of the process, and this will be determined by the undertone color of your skin.

You can find what your skin’s undertone is by looking at your veins through your skin in bright natural light.

If your veins look bluish or purplish, then you have a cool undertone to your skin. If your veins are a greenish color, then you have a warm undertone.

If you can’t see the color of your veins or they’re similar in color to your skin, then you have a neutral overtone.

So if you have a warm undertone, choosing a medium to dark chocolate spray tan will give you a radiant glow while balancing out your natural color.

For cool and neutral undertones, opting for a slightly darker spray will give the same results. You can discuss this with your spray tan therapist.

Spray Tan Prep

Double Dark Spray Tan

Before visiting a salon to get your spray tan applied, you’ll need to prepare your skin for the experience. For starters, your skin needs to be completely exfoliated to get rid of any dead skin cells.

Use a good exfoliating body scrub or a body brush to slough away the dead skin.

You’ll also need to get rid of any hair.

If you wax or shave, then you’ll need to leave at least 48 hours before your appointment.

Otherwise, the spray tan could cause irritation or infect broken skin. It is advised that you don’t moisturize your skin after you shower and before your spray tan.

So if you suffer from dry skin, shower and moisturize your skin the night before your treatment.

Spray Tan Aftercare

Your spray tan will last for longer if you follow up on your treatment by taking extra care of your skin.

After most spray tans, you’ll need to stay away from water for a few hours while they work their magic, so no baths, showers, or swimming just after your treatment.

When you do shower, it’s best to use lukewarm water, since hot water can cause your pores to open and fade the tan.

You should also avoid using oil-based skincare products and deodorant, as these can interfere with the spray tan ingredients and again fade your tan faster.

Shaving, exfoliating, and even excessive sweating also have the potential of fading your newly tanned skin.

Fake Tan for Dark Skin

You may also be pleased to hear that you don’t have to go to a spray tanning salon to get an instant glow. There are many dark self-tanners and spray tans on the market that will also do the same job in the comfort of your own home.
