If you’re like most people, your bathroom cabinet and bedroom drawer tops are full of beauty products — some everyday favorites, and some that you try once and forget.

You probably have a moisturizer (or three) among the range. However, are you aware of what you’re slathering on your face? Sometimes the ingredients in these products will damage your skin — no matter what the marketing blurb claims.

And that’s why I never use moisturizer. Wait what? Yes, you read that right!

And in this article, I’ll share with you why.

I Never Use Moisturizer

Now, you may be thinking that it’s completely crazy to never use moisturizer. That’s because you’ve been conditioned to believe that leaving the house without it is a complete no-no, especially if you already suffer from dry and flaky skin.

However, there are some good reasons as to why I never use moisturizer. And in this article, I’m going to share them with you.

Because of incessant marketing, most of us have been conditioned to accept that our skin is a problem. However, this is generally not the case. In fact, any problems we have with our skin are generally a result of using certain products or following an unhealthy lifestyle.

Because of incessant marketing, most of us have been conditioned to accept that our skin is a problem.

You see, the skin is our largest organ of our bodies, and so any eruption that manifests on the surface is a result of damage or something not working properly from within.

The first reason why I never use moisturizer, is because the majority of the dedicated moisturizing products on the market ultimately work to make your skin dryer, which is why you have to keep using them to make your skin soft and supple.

Why would the manufacturers do this?

Well, there are a few reasons as to why. The main one being that big brand companies like Cerave and Cetaphil are all about making profit. So, their bottom line is to keep making money and for you to keep buying their beauty products! Not necessarily to actually make your skin better.

The Science Behind Moisturizers

If you wake up in the morning, inspect your skin in the bathroom mirror, and notice dry and flaky skin, then your first instinct is to lather your face with some moisturizer to remedy the problem.

However, this may not be the best thing to do.

The reason why is because what’s really happening is that what looks like flaky skin is basically an abundance of dry skin cells.

All these dead skin flakes on the surface confuse most people into thinking that they have dry skin, so they’ll lather on even more moisturizer, which compounds the problem even further!

So, by laying moisturizer on top of all your dead skin cells on the surface of your face, this compression of dead skin cells stops them from naturally shedding, which makes your skin appear dry when it’s not.

Also, moisturizers only work on the surface level. No matter what the marketing says, they don’t work deep into the layers of your skin, and their effect isn’t long-lasting.

Although they may make your skin feel good at first, you’ll find yourself needing to apply it, again and again, to keep getting the same effect.

This means that things like exfoliating dead skin cells, using an adequate SPF, and making sure that your diet is full of antioxidants that kill off the free radicals that will age your skin will work much better than just simply moisturizing your skin!

Your skin actually gets the hydration that it needs from the amount of water you drink and the natural whole foods that you consume.

We all kinda know this, but it’s so tempting to apply moisturizer because why not?

Smooth Improvement

First, I want to say that whatever beauty routine you have to keep the skin on your face moisturized isn’t wrong. You do you. And depending on what else you’re doing, like self-taning, you may still want to moisturize.

However, getting into a routine of not moisturizing, and instead doing regular exfoliation can have a dramatic effect of making your skin both brighter and more vibrant. Because it has worked for me!

So, that’s why I never use moisturizer, and I urge you to give it a try, especially if you like the thought of making your life more sustainable.
