What is Spray Tanning?

Spray tanning the process of applying a solution all over the skin in a thin mist to give the perfect tan. This works due to a chemical called Dihydroxyacetone or DHA which sticks to the skin’s cells and makes them darker. The DHA reacts with the outermost layer of dead skin, and turns those dead cells a brown color.

This creates the tan effect, and will last until the dead skin cells are shed.

A spray tan is a great option for a quick tan before an event or vacation.

Most people choose to get a spray tan about 48 hours before any event in order for the most natural results.

Spray Tan Booth

A typical spray tan would be done by an automatic machine where you are in a stand-up position. Inside, there are automatic nozzles that will spray the tanning solution on your body.

Once you enter the spray booth you’ll be instructed to rotate within the booth or to remain still and the nozzles would rotate around you.  This option is typically more affordable and less customizable.

Air Brush Tan

There are also airbrush spray tans that are done by a spray tanning artist. An airbrush tan is typically done in a studio, with you and the spray artist.

The airbrush tan is typically more customizable and slightly more expensive. You may have more selection on the products used, including an organic selection.

Coconut Oil After a Spray Tan

Coconuts on Beach

Applying coconut oil is one of the best ways to nourish your skin, particularly after a spray tan. Coconut oil is made from fatty acids which penetrate the skin. Applying coconut oil on the skin can also help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by moisturizing deeper layers of skin.

You want to apply coconut oil after you shower to keep your skin moisturized. Don’t immediately put coconut oil on your skin after your spray tan. If you want to put something on the skin right after, try baby powder.

Let the tan set, then shower and apply coconut oil.

Coconut oil has amazing nourishing properties. And when applied to the skin it will lock in the moisture in order for your spray tan to last longer.

There are many types of coconut oil products out there, including infused lotions and other body creams. Although the best way to nourish the skin for a long-lasting spray tan is to use virgin coconut oil for its natural benefits.

Preparing and Caring for your Spray Tan

Before your spray tan, there are many things you can do to improve the results of the tan and how long it will last. The first is to exfoliate the entire body. It is recommended to exfoliate your body and face before tanning to remove any dead skin cells.

After exfoliating the body, then it is important to shave. Shaving will remove all unwanted hair and provide a smooth and fresh surface area for the spray tan. Shaving is also good to do before the tan, as you may not want to shave after because this can reduce the appearance of your color.

After exfoliating and shaving, it is not recommended to apply any lotion. If you choose to apply lotion, you may use your tanning lotion.

These lotions are designed to improve the color of your tan and increase the length your tan will last.

When going to your spray tan, dress in dark loose clothing. In case any residue from your spray tan transfers onto your clothes, it is best to wear a dark color. Wearing something loose will prevent any crease marks from being imprinted into your tan. Lastly, bring an umbrella!

The last thing you need on your way home from the tanning studio is to be rained on, leaving drip marks all over your body. Avoid moisture, and don’t exercise after your spray tan.

There are a few ways to make your spray tan last longer. One is to reduce the amount of water exposed to the body. After your initial shower about 8-10 hours after your spray tan, avoid baths or swimming as this will start to reduce the appearance of your spray tan.

Keeping your skin moisturized is one of the best ways to maintain your spray tan. When the skin gets dry, it becomes flakey and may peel.

In this case, any type of spray tan would also flake and peel off.

There are many different types of lotions and post-spray tan creams. However, one of the best ways is to use 100% natural coconut oil.

Be sure to do the appropriate preparation before your tan, and be mindful of the aftercare for the best results!

Coconut oil will definitely not harm the appearance of your spray tan and with its natural moisturizing benefits, why not lather up?
