How To Make Your Eyes Pop

There are a multitude of options available, from makeup to skincare, for you to use to make your eyes pop, including eye creams, primers, eyebrow pencils, eyeliners, eyeshadows, highlighters, and mascara.

And you probably have at least one of each of these items in your current cosmetic case.

Let’s now take a closer look at each one and how they work together, so that you’ll know how to use them to maximum effect to make your eyes pop whenever you want them to.

Brow Effect

Melanie Marris from BrowCode informs us that “the biggest mistake I’ve probably seen is people messing around too much with their natural brows to achieve on-trend brows. You don’t have to physically wax off the brows to achieve the current sought-after brows! Trends are going to come and go, so you should use brow products to make your brows look on-trend instead.”

In that light, let’s start simple.

If you don’t have the right defined eyebrow, then you don’t have the correct frame to start with. A properly defined eyebrow will frame the rest of your face, which will move all the attention to your eye area.

If you’re new to brow pencils, start by using an eyebrow pencil that matches the color of your natural brows to outline the shape that you want.

But once you’re confident with your pencil, Makeup Artist Srijani Roy recommends that you “fill the corners of your eyebrows with a darker shade of your eyebrow pencil. Take a lighter shade to fill in the center of your brows.”

Next, fill in your eyebrows with an eyeshadow that also matches your natural brow color, using short strokes to brush the hair up.

Once you’ve filled the color in, you can set your brows in place by using a clear eyebrow gel. Doing all this will provide you with the frame your face needs for the rest of your eye makeup.

If you don’t have eyebrow gel, consider Vaseline! As Dr. Rosmy Barrios, suggests, “you can use vaseline instead of eyebrow gel. Beautiful eyebrows will frame your face and make your eyes pop even more.”

Microblading, Ombre Brows, and the Like

Not all of us have perfect arched brows.

Many find that getting procedures like microblading and ombre brows can dramatically change the way your eyes look. While they’re costly and have some recovery time, microblading and similar eyebrow procedures can even out awkward brow lines and give long-lasting beautiful brows.

Melanie Marris of BrowCode reminds us that “there’s a lot of room for trial and error in brow styling today. For instance, a lot of people fear semi-permanent treatments like microblading, microshading and even the non-invasive procedure of brow lamination. However, at-home brow cosmetics nowadays are designed to carefully replicate the effects of these more permanent options. You can replicate the effects of brow lamination with a lamination gel, microblading with tinthennabrow dye, and so on.

Prime Your Peepers

Creasing eyeshadow color that also slides off during the day is the last thing you want, if you love the appearance of eyes that pop. Therefore, using a primer to smooth out the skin on your eyelids will make them ready for eyeshadow that will also stay in place for the rest of the day.

Line It Up

It really doesn’t matter what type of eyeliner that you choose to use for your beautiful creation. Whether it’s a pencil, liquid liner, or gel, it’s up to you to decide what your preference is, and that will depend on what you find easiest to use.

If your eyes are blue or light hazel, then using a brown eyeliner would be best for making your eyes pop, while those with brown eyes should opt for a black liner to do the same. For more drama, you should apply the liner as close to your eyelashes as possible.

See our article on brown vs black eyeliner for further tips on choosing the right shade.

To create a stunning smoky look, then you can apply the liner to your lower lashes as well. It will be easier to use a small eyeshadow brush to do this, making sure that the liner at the top and bottom both meet at the outer corner.

Color Me Beautiful

Creating some depth with your eyeshadow color is quite possibly the most important step when it comes to choosing the colors that you’ll use. You want to make sure that the colors you choose compliment your skin tone, as well as your eye color.

As far as your skin tone goes, the darker your natural color is, the warmer you want your eyeshadow to be. Meanwhile, the lighter your skin tone is, then you want to make sure that your eyeshadows are of cooler colors.

When it comes to complimenting your eye color, you want to make sure that the eyeshadow is opposite on the color wheel. Do you remember the color wheel from art class? So, for instance, if you have blue eyes, then you can use golds, bronzes, copper, rich browns, and dusty roses to build some depth.

To create dramatic depth that pops, first apply the lightest color shadow on the entirety of your eyelid. Use a darker eyeshadow to apply in the crease above your eyelid, which will give the illusion of dimension.

Finally, blend the colors together to create a seamless look. By using a flat eyeshadow brush, this will help you to get a more seamless appearance.

If your eyes are hazel, then you’re in luck! Basically any shade of eyeshadow that is available will make your eyes pop, because of the flecks of natural color you were born with.

If you like wearing golden hues, then you can make your eyes look even more radiant with eyeshadows of this color, as they will cause the green and brown flecks in your eyes to appear more enhanced.

If your eyes are hazel, then you’re in luck! Basically any shade of eyeshadow that is available will make your eyes pop, because of the flecks of natural color you were born with.

Eyeshadows with red undertones such as burgundy, rusty browns and purple will cause green eyes to pop, while bright contrasting shades like turquoise, teal, and cobalt blues will give brown eyes a stunning effect that will have heads turning.

Alternatively, you can also opt to just use one eyeshadow color that is similar to your own eye color. Simply give a dusting over your entire lid. This is a quick and effective way of making your eyes pop that can work just as well, but will also make your eyes appear more natural.

Light Up Your Life

Choosing to wear a highlighter on your eyes will also work well for making them pop. And you don’t even need to have a specialized highlighter to do this. You can also use a sparkly eyeshadow, which will also do the trick.

Simply apply a light dusting of either under your eyebrows and in the area of your tear ducts. This easy application will make it look like there is light bouncing off your eyes, which is a sure way to make them look brighter and bolder.

If you choose to use a sparkly eyeshadow to do this trick, pick one with coppery or golden tones, which will bring on the enhancement that you’re after.

Bring On The Drama

Unless you have eyelash extensions that are creating a frame around your eyes, you should always use a mascara, which will make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

You’ll get the best effect by first curling your lashes first with an eyelash curler for a few seconds, before you coat them up to three times, working from the base of your lashes to the tip. To create even more drama, you should also do the same to your bottom lashes.

You could even try using different formulas of mascara to create a more customized effect, which will make your eyes really pop. The longer and thicker they look, the more dramatic they will look. And remember to always use black mascara, which will give the greatest effect.

Of course, you won’t need to use mascara to do this. If you would rather wear false eyelashes to create a more dramatic effect, then you’re more than welcome to do so. If you need help deciding what type of falsies to choose, click here to read our article Mink vs Synthetic Lashes.

However, there are also mascaras that will give you the effect of wearing falsies, just like Essence’s Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara , which sculpts each lash to give it both definition and volume.

This cruelty free formula is also gluten free, and will give your lashes the appearance of wearing falsies in an instant. It’s been formulated to wear all day. One coat will give your lashes defined volume, while three coats will offer a voluminous and bold look that definitely pops.

Curls for Days

If you want to make your eyes pop, you have more options than just slathering them with makeup! An eyelash curler (heated or standard, either works) can bring attention to your eyes, even if it doesn’t lengthen your lashes.

Dr. Rosmy Barrios suggests, “curling your eyelashes is a very effective way to make your eyes stand out. This trick will be incredibly effective if your features are naturally dark or you have long lashes.”

Makeup Artist Srijani Roy breaks down how to do it, nice and simple: “Squeeze tightly for 20 seconds to make your lashes stand out. Groom your eyebrows using an eyebrow brush.”

But many of us have had the experience of squeezing the curler over the lashes, waiting a bit, and then looking in the mirror and wondering where the curly lashes are!

Dr. Barrios says, “if the result is unnoticeable after curling the eyelashes, apply vaseline to them. It will give a slight effect of wet eyelashes and darken them naturally, so it will look like you are wearing
mascara, although, in reality, you are without makeup.”

If you do happen to have eyelash extensions, be careful applying vaseline to them.

Dark Circle Correction

While Dark Circles may sound like the latest Lord of the Rings spin-off series, in reality, they are something far worse!

Many of us have to deal with frustrating dark circles around our eyes, bland shades that make our eyes look flat and lifeless. Darker makeup only makes them worse.

The answer to dark circles is to find the right eye cream! It may feel like dark circles happen only to older women, but the progression is slow. Start your eye cream regime now!

Dr. Barrios suggests “It is enough to choose a very rich eye cream. They usually leave a white cast like sunscreen, brightening the dark circles under the eyes and acting as a low-coverage concealer. This way, you can liven up and highlight your eyes without makeup.”

Good eye care can help, as well.

Srijani Roy from StyleCraze recommends the classics like cucumber and ice cubes. She says, “brighten and depuff your eyes with home remedies like placing cucumber slices or ice cubes on your eye lids. “
