Types of Eyelash Extensions
Lash extensions come in three varieties – classic, volume and hybrid extensions.
Classic Lashes
Classic eyelash extensions focus on creating length, tend to look the most natural, and are good for everyday wear.
The application process involves one false eyelash being applied to every natural eyelash. Classic lashes will add length to natural lashes, as opposed to volume.
Volume Lashes
Volume eyelash extensions are great for creating a dramatic, fuller, thicker lash look, rather than length. Anywhere from 2 to 6 volume lashes are placed for every natural eyelash, one at a time, arranged in a fan formation.
They are aptly named 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, or 6D extensions based on the number of lashes you choose to get per fan.
Anything over 4D is going to appear that you are wearing a strip versus the more natural look of classic and hybrid extensions.

Hybrid Lashes
Hybrid Eyelash Extensions provide a combination of the extra length of classic extensions with the extra thickness of volume extensions.
These are particularly good if you have short, sparse eyelashes.
Hybrid lashes involve using 30% classic lashes to 70% volume lashes. This creates a more texturized, fuller look than classic lashes but is not as uniform in appearance as volume lashes so they tend to look more natural.
*Cluster Lashes
Though technically cluster lashes are not true eyelash extensions, we’ve added them here for a few reasons. Though they are usually much cheaper than classic, volume, and hybrid extensions, some salons try to pass them off as the more expensive lash extensions.
Unlike the classic, volume, and hybrid extensions, cluster lashes are pre-made fans, or clusters, of lashes.
They are applied all at once to one natural lash, rather than each lash extension being individually applied. They’re essentially a salon-applied false eyelash.
Cluster lashes require a lot more lash adhesive to apply than the other types of extensions and cluster lashes are applied right at the lash line.
In many cases, the adhesive is touching the skin.
If the adhesive is in contact with the skin, it can block hair follicles, so new eyelashes are unable to grow and you risk ingrown hairs or styes.
They are also very heavy and if used too frequently, can actually cause your natural lashes to fall out. We’d recommend avoiding cluster lashes altogether.
Can You Put Mascara On Hybrid Lashes?
NO! While you can use mascara, like Alluring Length & Volume Mascara for eyelash extensions on classic lash extensions, mascara on hybrid or volume lashes is a definite no-no.
The problem with using mascara on hybrid and volume lashes is that it’s a whole lot of extra weight on your natural lashes, which can lead them to fall out prematurely.
Also, with hybrid and volume lashes, you’ve added a heap of extra lashes. Applying mascara to your now newly super densely packed set of lashes will cause them to stick and cake together – not a good look.
How Long Do Hybrid Lashes Last?
Hybrid lash extensions can last up to 8 weeks. But with regular fill-ins every 2-to 3 weeks, they can last even longer.
How Long Do Volume Lashes Last?
Volume Lashes last about 4-6 weeks, which is the natural lifespan of your natural lashes. To avoid your volume lashes getting patchy, you can go for a fill-in every 2-3 weeks.
What To Consider When Getting Eyelash Extensions
Whether you decide to go for the hybrid or the volume, there are a few things you need to consider if you’re thinking about getting eyelash extensions.
#1. Choose your lash salon technician carefully. Applying lash extensions requires some skill. Look at customer reviews online.
#2. It’s a long process. Depending on the type of lash extensions and how many lashes are applied, it can take anywhere from 1 ½, probably closer to 2 hours, to 3 or more. If you’re not one to be able to sit still for that long, you might want to rethink extensions.
#3. Beware of any salon that offers quick service. If a salon promises you a full set of lash extensions in under an hour – run!
#4. Avoid pre-made fans of lashes. Remember the cluster lashes we talked about earlier that you should avoid at all costs? If the salon offers to give you lash extensions with pre-made fans…. Also run!
#4. Don’t touch your lashes! Though it can be tempting to stroke your long luscious lashes once you’ve had them applied, you are weakening the adhesive because of the oil in your hands. You are also quite likely introducing bacteria onto your lashes which can lead to infections.
#5. Only use oil-free makeup remover. Though you won’t need to wear mascara, if you wear other eye makeup, like eyeliner or eye shadow, make sure you remove your makeup with an oil-free eye-makeup remover and try to avoid touching your lashes.
#6. You will have to change the way you wash your face. No more face in the running shower water, or splashing water from the sink. The following tips will help you keep your face clean while not damaging your lashes.

And while they are the least natural-looking of the two, they are definitely the more dramatic choice.
Hybrid Lash Extensions
Hybrid lashes combine the length of classic extensions and the thickness of volume extensions by using a mix of classic extensions and 2D or 3D volume extensions to create thicker AND longer lashes.
Hybrid lashes are usually 30% classic to 70% volume lashes. Depending on the look you are going for, the lash technician can adjust the ratio of classic lashes to volume lashes.
Because the different types of lashes are different lengths, you get more texture and more natural-looking lashes with hybrids than you do with volume lashes.
