The OrangeTheory Philosophy
OrangeTheory Fitness (OTF) is one of the most popular and exciting gym franchises in the country (and world!)
The OrangeTheory workout philosophy focuses on group training pushing endurance, strength, and power training. Exercises that burn more calories post-workout include heart rate-based interval training.
The OTF philosophy centers around friendly competition, with everyone’s scores, data, and Heart Rate Zones plastered up on the big screens in the gym. It’s a great incentive to push a little harder and get some Splat Points when you’re in the red!
All fitness levels will benefit from the workout since intensity is determined by your individual Heart rate zones. In addition, OTF coaches run the workout so you don’t under or over-train.
Driven By Data
Much of the data OTF uses comes through its heart rate monitor system. When you join OTF, you can buy a monitor through them, but you can also buy the monitors second-hand.
While we love OTF’s classes and setup, sometimes it’s nice to just go for a run or bike ride outside on a nice day. Can you track your data with the OTF heart rate monitor outside class? Yes, you can!

How to Use An OrangeTheory Heart Rate Monitor Outside of Class
You’ll need to connect your phone to the monitor and get moving!
Connecting via Your Phone
The following steps will show you how to pair Orangetheory heart rate monitors with phones via Bluetooth:
Step 1: The monitor’s battery needs to be fully charged
To avoid connection delays, make sure the battery is fully charged. Upon receiving your new heart rate monitor, plug it in to check its functionality. Be alert here as you may not receive a low battery warning from all heart rate monitors.
Step 2: Connect your phone to Bluetooth and turn on the monitor
To detect the heart rate monitor, turn on your monitor so that the LED light is displayed. This will indicate it’s ready to pair with Bluetooth.
Pull up the Bluetooth settings menu on your phone or iPhone and scan for devices in proximity.
Pair the devices.
Step 3: Put on the strap for the heart rate monitor
Put your heart rate monitor on. It will either be a chest strap or an armband.
Your heart rate can only be accurately measured if you’ve got the pod in direct contact with your skin.
It is also recommended that you always clean the strap of the monitor each time you use it. It does not matter if it has to be rinsed under tap water. A soft, clean cloth should also be used to clean the pod sensor. As a result of the cleaning, sweat will be removed, which affects the reading and quality of the monitor.
Step 4: Download the app
The Orangetheory Fitness app can be downloaded (if you haven’t already). With the app, you can access a variety of Orangetheory Fitness workouts. Just FIY, these include workouts that you can do outside class!
Use the search bar to find Orangetheory Fitness in the Google Play Store or Apple Store. The app can be downloaded to your phone and opened by clicking on it.
On the left side of the app, you should see orange blinking slashes. Tap on this to go to the Orangetheory Fitness workout selection. The next step is to click on the At-Home Workout.
You’re ready to burn some calories outside the gym! Just remember you need to keep your phone with you in order to track the data and keep the Bluetooth connection.
Can You Use the Monitor When Doing Outside Activities?
Absolutely! Many OTF entheusiasts love to keep their heart rate monitors on, post-class, in order to continue tracking their heart rate.
In addition, the heart rate monitor can be used for running, cycling, or any outdoor activity to get accurate results.
It is also Bluetooth and ANT+ compatible, making it compatible with other fitness apps.
