To some degree, our weight is tied to our health and body image. Many who step on a scale think that they are already too heavy and aren’t happy with what that number represents.

But is the scale a good way to judge your health?

If you happen to go to Planet Fitness, you might not notice any scales visible in the open. So does Planet Fitness have scales, or do they take a different approach to weight management?

The short answer is no, Planet Fitness does not have scales in their gyms.

In this article, we will discuss the reasons Planet Fitness does not have scales in its fitness clubs.

Scales At Gyms

Using a gym scale can be very convenient. The scales help you track your baseline. You can weigh yourself and then decide how much weight you need to lose. After a few weeks or months, you can weigh in again to see your progress.

In that way, you use the scale properly.

These scales are often calibrated and are of better accuracy and quality than typical home scales.

However, there are many who get obsessed with the scale and that numeric reading. They measure themselves almost every day. Then get disappointed that they haven’t lost any weight.

Or worse, they gained some weight!

This could lead some people to conclude that their workout isn’t working. Even after all that effort, the number just. isn’t. going. down.

They may end up canceling their gym membership just because of this reason, or maybe they just dive into that bag of chips.

Remember that getting fit and losing weight doesn’t happen overnight. It also doesn’t mean that when you become heavier, you’ve gained fat. Weight can fluctuate as you make your body fit. The added or lost pounds in a day can all be due to water weight.

Some people might not notice the loss of weight due to fat loss because they’ve also gained muscle in the process. Muscles are heavier than fat so when they weigh in, they might not see any huge difference but their clothes might have already fitted better than before.

Scales can help you see your progress but they should not be your only basis as to whether your workout routine is working or not. Take measurements, focus on how your clothes fit and notice how you feel.

Those things can also help you determine if your hard work is paying off.

Does Planet Fitness Have Scales? No They Don’t.

Most gyms have scales readily available for use, but Planet Fitness doesn’t. They take the position that the scale is not really the reason why you should go to a gym!

Planet Fitness members are looking for health and strength in a welcoming environment. Grab those free weights and get to work.

Scales can detract from that environment.

Scales can help you track your progress, of course. But there are also other ways you can do that. If you really want to weigh yourself, you can purchase yourself one at home.

In that way, you can use it anytime you want.

Just remember not to focus too much on it because your weight may not be moving while your body is improving.

That’s what matters!

Why Doesn’t Planet Fitness Have Scales?

The main reason why Planet Fitness doesn’t have any scales in their clubs is due to their slogan “Judgement Free Zone”. They don’t market themselves as your regular gym with bodybuilders and gym rats.

They are more for beginners who may not have full confidence to go to a regular gym because they are afraid of being embarrassed by more experienced gym members.

They believe that the scales could be a cause of judgment, not only from other people but judging ourselves as well. Some may become disheartened by the number on the scale, and cancel their Planet Fitness membership out of frustration.

Another reason why scales aren’t found in Planet Fitness is that some people find scales intimidating. As Planet Fitness caters to beginners, they also think that their members might become over-reliant with the scales as a measurement of health.

Scales are not the only way to measure progress.

Additionally,  it is also an expense to purchase and maintain on the side of Planet Fitness, like pools and saunas are. Due to potentially negatively affecting their members, they simply opted not to provide scales.

This can save them a little bit of cash while they also help change the mindset of their members.

Aim for health, not for some arbitrary number!
