Canceling a Gym Membership Will Make You Sweat!

Signing up at the gym is easy, they will happily take your money! But canceling your gym membership is known for being difficult, challenging, and frustrating.

The gyms want to keep their clients for as long as possible. Who can blame them? They make the most from people who continue to pay their monthly fee, without using the gym.

And by making the cancellation process difficult, the gym gets a chance to talk you out of canceling your membership.

That may be a reason that many people find it challenging. Some people just find it difficult to resist the offers or alternatives the gym has to offer.

However, standing firm, knowing that you really want to cancel the membership, and voicing it out gets the job done.

Additionally, some people seem to have difficulty canceling their membership simply because they don’t know how.

There is a process you need to follow.

It can take up to a month for most gym locations to finally cancel your membership. Getting it started immediately takes you a step closer to achieving that goal.

The process of cancellation is actually found in their contract. You just have to carefully read it before you join the gym.

Sometimes, with all our excitement to join, we… overlook… the details. Then, we just focus on them when we need them.

How to Cancel OrangeTheory Membership

You are dead serious about canceling your gym membership at OrangeTheory.

The best way to do it is to simply go to the franchise location where you registered as your home gym.

Your records are there and they are the only ones who can cancel it for you.

The next thing to do is to tell the staff that you want to cancel your membership.

Be prepared. The staff is trained to do their best to keep the members. They may give you alternatives that could be tempting!

You could certainly take those alternatives. But if you really want to cancel your membership, then just firmly and courteously tell them you need to cancel.

There is no need for heated arguments as they are also just doing their job in trying to prolong your membership.

If you don’t want to deal with potential alternatives and deals, you could simply say “I’m leaving the area for work. I’m moving to a new location that doesn’t have OrangeTheory.” They aren’t going to argue about that.

Once you’ve made it clear that you really want to cancel your membership, they’re going to give you a cancellation form that you have to fill up.

OrangeTheory Cancellation Policy

You also have to remember that even if you cancel the membership in person, it doesn’t happen instantly. They require 30-day advance notice for membership cancellation.

That means you’d still be charged for next month’s dues. Then, the contract or your membership will be canceled.

This is the most effective and simplest way to cancel your OTF membership or any other gym membership for that matter.

However, for OrangeTheory Fitness, there is an alternative method.

Canceling OrangeTheory Membership Through Certified Mail

If you can’t personally go to your home gym and you really want to cancel your membership, you can cancel through certified mail. In this procedure, you have to write a letter about your request for cancellation.

Mailing this document through certified email will ensure that there is a record of receipt. A signature is needed in order for them to receive your letter of cancellation.

That guarantees that your letter has successfully reached them.

The cancellation date would be 30 days after your letter has been received.

Similar to canceling in person, you’ll be charged for another month before the cancellation takes place because of their 30-day notice policy.

Is It Possible To Cancel Your Membership Through Email?

Most people will say that cancellation through email isn’t possible. However, there are some who also claim that they have successfully done it. It likely depends on the individual location.

This method may or may not work, no guarantees here

If you choose to use this method of sending your letter of intent to cancel your membership, make sure that you provide complete and detailed information about your membership.

Such would include the following:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Address
  • Contact Number
  • Email
  • Membership ID number
  • Last 4 digits of your credit card used for the membership
  • Signature

When canceling OrangeTheory through email, you should use the verified email on your account. They will respond and could ask you to confirm your cancellation, or could they may invite you to the facility to cancel in person.

As you can see, you may still need to go to the facility physically. It may be best to just go in person in your enrolled franchise directly.

What To Do After Canceling Your OrangeTheory Membership

As we’ve mentioned, the cancellation doesn’t happen instantly. Your letter or request for cancellation will take another 30 days to be in effect.

That means, you may still be charged for your next month’s dues. There is nothing you can do about that.

However, you should make sure to check during the succeeding months after cancellation. Make sure they haven’t made an error and continued to charge your account. If so, they will give you a refund.

If not, you could file a dispute about the additional charge on your credit card. If you’ve sent the cancellation through certified mail, you will have proof of the date.

Alternatively, OTF should also have the records in your cancellation form dated as well, and shouldn’t dispute the charge.

Make sure you check the following month. Most credit cards will only allow you to dispute charges within 60 days from when the charge is reflected on your bill.

With the dispute, the issuer will also be given 30 days to respond in writing after your dispute request is received.

Reasons Why People Cancel Their OrangeTheory Membership

There are three main reasons why OrangeTheory Fitness members may want to cancel their membership and they are as follows:

Health Reasons

The main reason to work out is to keep your body healthy. However, there can still be unforeseen circumstances when your health is no longer suitable for the OrangeTheory classes.

Let’s face it, the classes at OrangeTheory involve strenuous exercises. You may do them even if you are not in your best shape, but they can be challenging. Keeping your heart rate in the orange zone may be difficult.

Some people may develop a disease or ailment, or may have an injury that prevents them from taking the classes.

Financial Reasons

Another reason why people might want to cancel their membership is due to their finances. The world is in a rocky time, and no one is guaranteed a job or income!

Some may find their membership to be too expensive. It may be that during the winter, the OTF membership is great. But in the summer, fresh air, sunshine, and outdoor activies are more exciting.

And of course, some may be unable to afford to pay for their membership. All those reasons are understandable and quite common.

Personal Reasons

Another reason is due to personal reasons. Some simply don’t want to workout at OrangeTheory anymore. They may not feel that the workouts are working for them.

Some may need to cancel their membership because they are moving and there is no OTF franchise location near them.

Alternatives To Canceling OTF Membership

Sometimes, canceling your membership at OTF may not be the best solution for you. Depending on your reasons, you can talk to the staff so they can suggest other alternative things you could do instead of simply canceling your membership.

If you have more classes than you usually attend. You may want to downgrade your plan. Your busy schedule could just be temporary so you just need to lessen your classes.

Doing this is easy and most say that you don’t even need a 30-day notice but just make sure you inform your local OTF facility before you get billed for the month.

Some people have downgraded and upgraded their plans multiple times smoothly. This will also depend on the franchise location.

Alternatively, you could also freeze your membership if you don’t plan to attend any classes within the next month.

However, this is just temporary.

OrangeTheory Class Cancellation Policy

If you’re not on an unlimited plan, you will likely face fees if you have to cancel a class you’ve signed up for.

If you have signed up for a class at OrangeTheory and want to cancel, you will need to cancel your class at least 8 hours before the class happens if you want to avoid any fee. This will give other members enough time to sign up for the class.

This policy may vary by location, so it’s always a good idea to check with your OTF to see what their late class cancellation policy is.

Final Thoughts

Canceling your OrangeTheory membership may seem intimidating. There are lots of people who find it difficult to cancel gym memberships in general.

However, it’s really simple if you follow the process. The best way to cancel is to personally go to your local franchise location and fill up their cancellation form. Alternatively, you may also send a letter of cancellation through certified mail.

If you don’t want to deal with Customer Retention tactics, just say “I’m moving to a location that doesn’t have an OrangeTheory franchise nearby.”

Once you’ve set the wheels in motion, the cancellation won’t instantly take effect. It will take 30 days from the date you filled out the form or they received your letter for the cancellation to be complete.

Good luck!
